You've probably used them many times in the past to get auto, home, and life insurance quotes. Quote generator websites have been around in many different forms since the start of the Internet to help you get lower prices on many different kinds of insurance.

While there are many variations to the way these sites work, here is the basic process they follow for homeowners insurance. You enter information about your home including its location, size, age, roof type, construction materials, and other features along with your contact information. That information is sent by these websites to insurance companies who review your information and decide whether they would like to quote a price to insure your home.

All of the interested companies provide their quote information either directly to the website you originally visited or they might contact you either directly or through one of their agents. Depending on the quote generator website you used, you may receive an email containing a detailed quote, phone calls from insurance agents, or perhaps both.

In states other than Florida where there are hundreds of companies competing for your home insurance business, these quote generator websites can work well. They do the legwork for you and you end up with a lot of cost effective options to choose from.

Getting quotes for Florida home insurance presents a totally different situation when it comes to using these websites.

To begin with, unlike in other states, Florida has a lot fewer companies to choose from since only about 40 home insurance companies are writing new business. In addition, you should know that these Florida home insurance companies pay the quote generator websites for each lead that is provided to them. In reality what is happening is that the Florida insurance companies are paying the quote generator websites for the higher search engine rankings their sites have in order to reach more customers.

If you decide to use a Florida home insurance quote generator website, you will have to consider one or more of the following issues when using them.

First, some Florida homeowners insurance companies won't partner with the quote generator websites at all. They sell Florida home insurance direct or through an agent network and don't want to pay the additional fee to a quote website for the cost of the lead.

In addition, there are a large number of quote generator websites out there for each company to use to buy customer leads from. They will be limited to selecting only a handful of the quote generator websites that they feel will bring the most traffic and customer leads to them. More importantly, this means that none of these companies can afford to be featured on all of the quote generator websites. If you pick the wrong quote generator website, you might miss out on 10 to 15 companies in your Florida County that want to cover your home.

In each of the two situations described above, you'll run a high risk of missing out on multiple homeowners insurance companies in Florida who want to cover your home or you'll find that you are receiving the exact same quotes from the same few companies over and over again. No matter what, Florida home insurance will cost you more.

Missing out on even one company that is interested in covering you home is not a risk that you should take during the Florida home insurance crisis. Each new Florida home insurance quote that you obtain could save you thousands depending on where you live.

Finally, if you are planning on using a quote generator website to get Florida home insurance quotes, you have to consider the privacy of your personal information. While most of these websites protect your personal information, using some of them will result in you receiving a high volume of unwanted emails and phone calls from Florida insurance agents with a quote from the exact same company.

Given the situation with Florida home insurance, you have a much higher chance of finding lower cost insurance if you contact multiple independent agents that represent a large number of companies to cover your home instead of using the quote generator websites. Working with at least two large independent agents who can offer you the largest number of Florida home insurance agents is essential. Since each agent may represent a different group of companies, contacting more than one agent is your best chance to get a Florida home insurance quote from all the companies writing new business in your local market.

The more Florida home insurance quotes you get, the more you will save during the Florida home insurance crisis.

Florida had the second highest percentage of uninsured children in the U.S., and Florida ranked third among the states for having the highest number of uninsured children. More than one in six Florida children (797,000 children) were not covered by health insurance in Florida.

An estimated 8.6 million children had no health insurance coverage in the U.S. in 2007, and Congress passed two pieces of legislation that could have cut the number of uninsured children by almost half. President Bush vetoed both bills.

Florida Health Insurance For Families

The vast majority of uninsured Florida children came from families where at least one parent worked. More than two-thirds of uninsured children (or 71.4 percent) were living in Florida households where at least one family member worked full-time all year long.

More than half (or 60.7 percent) of these uninsured children were from low-income households with incomes below twice the poverty level. More than half (or 58.6 percent) of uninsured Florida children lived in two-parent households.

Half Of Medicaid Enrollees Are Children

Children make up about half of Medicaid's 42 million enrollees. Bills were introduced in both the House and Senate in 2008 to boost the Medicaid matching rate, but they were not included in the economic stimulus package that ultimately passed.

The U.S. has the highest Gross National Product (GNP) per capita in the world. It also has a lower life expectancy than nearly all the other rich countries, and even a few poor countries, despite being responsible for half of the world's health care bill. The U.S. also has the highest poverty levels of any wealthy country with large health disparities, and poor health outcomes.

Massachusetts Leads The Nation In Health Care Reform

National health care reform was modeled on the groundbreaking 2006 legislation of Massachusetts, which required adults to have health insurance. In Massachusetts, most people continue to receive insurance through employers with no changes. Those who were previously uninsured are now covered by subsidized programs such as MassHealth (Medicaid), the Children's Health Insurance Program, and the employer-based Insurance Partnership Program.

More people signed up for coverage at work, or bought coverage through the new exchange (the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority). Those who cannot afford insurance may obtain a waiver, but few have done so. Ninety-seven percent of adults in Massachusetts are covered by health insurance now, and that's the highest number of any state.

The largest increase in enrollment was implemented through the Commonwealth Care program, which allows those with a family income under the 300 percent federal poverty level to receive subsidized health insurance.

Massachusetts also limits insurance companies from excluding people who have pre-existing conditions. That reduces the fear that insurance companies will drop you as soon as you get sick. The move toward universal coverage made it possible to prevent insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions.

The Outlook For Health Insurance In Florida

Now that legislation has passed at the national level, the critical implementation is just beginning. The goal is for Florida's residents to be able to invest in health insurance that will be there for them if they need it, even when pre-existing conditions are found. That will make Florida health insurance a more secure investment. Those who can't afford it will also have greater access via subsidies so families and their children can receive long-overdue health care in Florida.

Florida health insurance costs can prove to be a very real obstacle to many Florida consumers that are searching for a comprehensive and affordable Florida health insurance policy. Florida health insurance premiums can be pricey at first glance. However, when you consider that even some routine surgeries plus a week or more in a Florida hospital could cost upwards of six figures then the importance of finding a Florida health insurance policy that is both comprehensive and affordable cannot be underestimated.

The Florida health insurance market is a very competitive market. This is at once a very good thing and a very bad thing for the Florida health insurance shopper. The competitiveness of the Florida health insurance market is good for the Florida consumer because it forces the top companies to drive down their rates in an effort to maintain affordable health insurance policies as they compete against each other for your business. The negative aspect of the Florida health insurance market's competitiveness is that many insurance companies are attracted to the strong demand for health insurance in the state of Florida and not all have the sterling reputation of an Aetna, Humana, or a United Healthcare.

Without mentioning names, this strong demand for Florida health insurance will attract health insurance companies to Florida that are forced to put calendar year limits in their policies or only cover benefits up to a certain amount (an indemnity style policy) in order to try and compete with stronger, more established companies.

Just to contrast the seriousness of this, imagine that you blow out your knee as you are exercising and you have to have arthroscopic knee surgery and a week plus in the hospital brings the total bill to $100,000.

With a strong reputable Florida health insurance company with an established dependable network such as one of the Florida health insurance "Big 3" (Aetna, Humana, and United Healthcare) you will have coverage of anywhere from $3,000,000 to $5,000,000 per person without any calendar year limits and without limits on benefits payable for certain procedures. That $100,000 hospital bill is whittled down to your maximum out of pocket cost of probably around $3,000 to $5,000 depending on your policies deductible and coinsurance amount.

Now imagine that you had decided years back that you wanted to go with a Florida health insurance company that you had never heard of until then and purchase a seemingly attractive indemnity policy or a policy with a calendar year limit: if the limit on the policy is for say $10,000 for that particular procedure or maybe only up to $200 a day for every day in the hospital

Every professional business should be keeping up with the demands and needs of its customers, if it is to survive. One of the essential tools of any business these days is to have a professional web site. This begins with choosing and registering a domain name that will clearly identify and brand your business online for many years to come, so you need to choose wisely.

How to choose a domain name

1. If you want your web site to have an added advantage in the search engines, think of a domain name that includes keywords visitors would search for in the main search engines.

2. Make a list of all the possible names that would suit your business (i.e. isitebuild.com contains resources for building your own web site or getting one built). Use www.nameboy.com for researching domain names. NameBoy will generate domain names based on the keywords you enter. If the dotcom name you want is not available, create a longer name that describes your business or use names that include hyphens (i.e. ihost-websites.com)

3. If possible, keep your domain name short so it is easy to spell and easy to remember. Take into account someone may remember the name but forget there is a hyphen in it – you then miss out on those potential customers.

4. If the dotcom name is not available, try the other new abbreviations such as .BIZ .US,.INFO, .TV. These are not as popular as .COM, however you may get closer to the name you want.

How to register a domain name

1. Any company that sells domain names must be registered and accredited with iCann - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (http://www.icann.org). You can get a domain name for under $10 from Godaddy.com. Read carefully what's on their site as you go through the registration process. It's easy to inadvertently sign up& for other services you don't need.

For a current list of companies that are accredited as registrars by iCann, visit Internic (www.internic.com). Subscribe FREE to Marketing Tips Newsletter

Name
Email
How to Choose a Hosting Company
How Much Hosting Space Do You Need?
Hosting from $30/year

2. Register your domain name in your own name, not someone else's. Sometimes your host may do this for you. This could cause you problems in the future, should you decide to transfer your domain to another hosting company.

3. Renewal - you have had your site on the Web for a year, sales are pouring in when suddenly, your site disappears – it won't show up anymore! What happened? Well, you forgot to renew your domain name. Hopefully this will never happen to you!

When you sign up for a new domain name, make sure your domain name registrar will send a reminder when your domain name is about to expire.

4. When asked about DNS server (domain name system) or Name Server information, insert your Primary Name Server and Secondary Name Server information – ask your future Web Hosting service for this information, if you don't have it handy.

What is the DNS system?

It is the computer action of changing domain names into& numeric Internet protocol (IP) numbers which enables& computers to locate web sites and e-mail.

If you haven't chosen a Web Host, then park your domain name with your domain name registrar (this is a temporary location to store your domain until you are ready to have it hosted).

How to transfer a domain name.

There may be several reasons why you would want to transfer:

-Renewing Domain Names
There is a good chance that you could save money on domain name renewals by transferring them to a different registrar. Check out the prices from different registrars at NewRegistrars.com.

Before renewing a domain name, make sure you know which registrar the domain name is actually registered with. WhoIsQuery.com is the only WhoIs known that handles the CORE registrars as well as the ICANN ones.

-You parked your domain name and have now found a Web Host to upload your site to.
-You are not happy with the service or are paying too much for your current web host and want to switch to another.

1. If you are transferring your domain name to another web host, download (copy) all files to your computer from your old host.& Sometimes files may be stored on your host but not on your computer, so doing this will ensure you downloaded the whole site.

Keep a copy of your files on the old host, while you transfer to& another host, so you won't experience any downtime of your web site.

2. Open a new hosting account.

3. Change the DNS (domain name system) or Name Server information& on the current domain name to the new hosting company name servers. You can find this information by going to the domain name registrar (the place where you registered your domain name).

Your domain will take some time (24-72 hours) to propagate over the Internet, before it appears on the new hosting company servers.

4. Upload all files to the new host.

5. Amend and test your web site. Check that all files have been& uploaded from your computer and that your web site appears exactly as it did before.

6. Cancel the previous hosting account when you are satisfied with the transfer of your domain name to the new host.

A Great Tip for registering several domain names. Since domain names are so cheap these days (they used to cost $35/year), you can afford to own several domains. Each domain can have its own web site. Most small sites use less than 5MB of hosting space, so you could host several sites for a small price.

What are the benefits of doing this?

Linking each of these web sites together and submitting them to the search engines will increase your sites search engine rankings. It will also broaden the places visitors can access your business. Generating a continuous traffic flow leads to more sales. You have now implemented and solved one of your crucial marketing strategies.
*********************************************************************
Herman Drost is the Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW)
owner and author of
http://www.iSiteBuild.com
Affordable Web Site
Design and Low Cost Web Hosting

Health care reform aimed at making medical care available to more people. The goal was to save lives and stop throwing money away on last-ditch E.R. measures by giving people access to preventive care. Why is Florida one of 25 states fighting the health care reform law?

Three federal judges on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals heard three hours of heated oral arguments. The panel went on to consider if they should contest the entire health care law or only a part of it. Last January, U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson of Florida ruled that the entire law should be invalidated. According to Vinson, the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional and the individual mandate is illegal. He said that the health care reform law exceeds Congressional power to regulate interstate commerce.

During hearings, U.S. Solicitor Neal Katyal said that the judges would be making a "deep, deep mistake" by contest the entire law. According to Katyal, parts of the health care reform law should survive. He says Congress has the right to intervene and regulate commerce with $43 billion in medical costs for uninsured Americans seeking medical care every year.

Opponents of the Affordable Care Act insist that imposing penalties to encourage people to get Florida health insurance is not the solution to the growing problem of uninsured Americans. Judge Frank Hull stated that the rolls of the uninsured could be lessened in other ways. For example, he suggested expanding Medicare discounts for seniors and making it easier for people with pre-existing health conditions to get FL health insurance coverage.

In the face of attempts to reduce Medicare, it seems unlikely that Medicare discounts will be expanded in our time. As to making it possible for people with pre-existing conditions to get coverage, spreading the cost for those needing more health care among a large population that requires less expensive medical treatment remains the most successful way to help people with deteriorating health get affordable coverage.

By 2014, the mandate to carry health insurance will require many to carry FL health insurance or face penalties. The penalty starts at $95 for the first year and then increases to $695 by 2016 and beyond. Not everyone will have to buy coverage is they don't have the income to do so, though. People who cannot afford coverage, such as those with below tax filing threshold incomes, will be eligible for assistance to pay for premiums.

Certain Types Of Florida Health Insurance Can Give Low-Premium Coverage Now

Whether the appeals court repeals the law or not, the public needs FL health insurance plans right now. The least expensive Florida Health Insurance plans have certain things in common that shoppers can use to find low-premium options.

The plans that have co-pays to see a doctor or to fill a prescription typically run higher than plans where you have a deductible to meet each year before anything beyond recommended preventive care is covered. That is a big problem for people with pre-existing conditions so the federal government has gotten behind programs to make coverage available to adults with health problems this year. The health care reform law has already guaranteed coverage to children with health problems and it promises to expand that guarantee to adults by 2014.

For adults in good health, the existing Florida health insurance plans with deductibles are a viable option because preventive services to check for budding health problems remain covered without being subject to a deductible. Vaccinations to ward off flu are covered as well.

For medical care beyond recommended preventive care, plans with deductibles are no help. PPO plans, a type of managed care, can help because charges for doctors who participate in the network are significantly lower than what it costs to see an out-of-network doctor.

Another option to get more from high-deductible Florida health insurance is to use a plan that allows opening a Health Savings Account, known as an HSA. Even though these accounts are called savings accounts, contributions can be invested in bonds, mutual funds or stocks. Of course, a regular interest-bearing savings account is also an option.

Regardless of how HSA funds are invested, the money earns tax-free interest like an IRA. Not only can the savings be used to cover traditional medical care until the deductible is met, but it can also be spent for things not covered under FL health insurance, such as dental care and homeopathy.

Until the future of our health care law is known, Florida residents can use deductible plans, PPO plans and Health Savings Accounts to maintain health insurance for Florida with premiums on the low end.

Good news for doctors! The State of Florida reports about a 3% drop in medical malpractice premiums during 2006–and this trend appears to continue this year. Everyone in the medical field remembers the medical malpractice (also known as med mal) crisis about five years ago. In 2003 tort reforms passed by the Florida legislature placed caps only on non-economic damages commonly referred to as “pain and suffering.” Claims against physicians for pain and suffering were capped at $500,000, and healthcare facilities or hospitals were capped at $750,000.

Insurance rate stabilization is important for all businesses but especially for doctors. Their premiums tend to be very large portion of their business cost. During the med mal crisis, many Florida doctors moved to other states where the rates were more favorable. This made Florida’s doctor shortage even more acute.

That trend is reversed today due to increased competition among med mal insurance companies. Florida now has about 30 companies writing in Florida. With this many companies stimulating competition, the rates should continue to decline. Some med mal companies are nonprofit and owned by doctors. I represent one of the companies and find this concept very stable and strong. I have noticed premium discounts on certain types of doctors of 10 to 15%. Certain doctor groups can receive up to 20% break, depending on their specialty.

Full-time physicians with hospital staff privileges are required to comply with a financial responsibility outlined in the Florida Statutes. The requirements are (1) use an escrow account (2) secure a letter of credit, (3) obtain malpractice insurance with a minimum amount of $250,000 per claim and $750,000 annual aggregate. If the physician has no hospital staff privileges, $100,000 per claim is the minimum malpractice requirement.

Emergency room physicians could fall under Florida’s sovereign immunity law if new legislation passes next session. It would cap these physicians’ medical malpractice claims at $100,000 per person. To receive additional compensation, a claimant would have to get a special bill passed by the legislature.

It’s interesting to follow med mal’s claim timeframes. The Bureau of Justice reports that between 2000 and 2004, 95% of medical malpractice insurance claims are settled prior to trial. In Florida an average of 15 months passes before a claimant reports an injury to the insurance provider. An average of 28 months passes before these claims are closed and the claimants receive compensation. This works out to be about four years from date of incident to date of settlement.

Timeframes are important because of the way medical malpractice policies are issued. Medical malpractice policies are issued on a claims-made basis, which means that claims are normally covered when they are reported during the policy year, no matter when the act actually took place.

Coverage for acts occurring prior to the policy period is called "prior-acts coverage," and the period prior to the policy period for which claims are covered is called the “prior-acts period.” Prior-acts coverage is usually only provided when a claims-made policy has been in force immediately prior to the current claims-made policy. Prior-acts coverage is defined as “full-prior acts," covering acts occurring at any time prior to the current policy period, or is defined by a "retroactive date." When a retroactive date is used, prior-acts coverage is provided only from the retroactive date to the current policy period.

"Tail coverage," also called an "extended-reporting period," provides protection for claims that are filed after a claims-made policy has been non-renewed or canceled. This coverage is optional, and the need can arise if the professional organization is acquired or goes out of business, or a decision is made not to purchase insurance. The terms and pricing for tail coverage vary greatly and are usually defined in the policy.

Have I confused you yet? Here’s something else to consider: unlike the homeowners policies, which are almost identical with every company in Florida, there is no standard policy form for the claims-made policy. There can be a big difference in the policy’s wording from company to company. These policies are complex and complicated. When purchasing this type of coverage you should use an insurance agent or risk manager who is knowledgeable and has experience in this field.

Keyword-Rich Domain Names

By Jill Whalen - 6/27/2002

The myth of using keyword-rich domains for SEO purposes has been perpetuated for way too long, and quite frankly I'm tired of seeing it written about as if it's an all-important SEO factor.

See for Yourself

Perform some searches in any spidering search engine and sure, you may very well find keyword-rich domains in the top spots. But upon closer inspection, you'll see that the same keywords are also in the Title tags of those sites. Title tags *are* very important to high rankings; I daresay that they're as important as body copy. Many see the keyword-rich domain name, and assume that's what is causing the high ranking. Yet it's much more likely that the high ranking is a direct result of the Title tag and/or the body text, along with the other usual SEO suspects.

Look at the Links

And let's not forget about off-the-page criteria. The reason why some sites are in the top of the results isn't always readily apparent by just looking at the site in question. Some rank highly simply because there are keywords in the hyperlinks pointing to the site. Google is especially susceptible to this phenomenon, which has been dubbed "Google Bombing" in the Web Blog world. If enough sites link to a site using the specific keyword phrase in the hyperlink, it can have a dramatic effect on rankings. David Gallagher recently interviewed me for his Business 2.0 article entitled "Top of the Heap," where he wrote about his quest to become the number-one site in Google for the phrase "David Gallagher." All he did was ask everyone who read his Web Blog to link to his site using his name in the hyperlink. Once the "Google Dance" for that month was finished, he was number one!

And no, his site does not have "David Gallagher" in the domain name. (As an aside, the sites he was up against were fan sites for the actor David Gallagher from the TV show "Seventh Heaven." You can read David's article -- and my quotes -- in the July 2002 Business 2.0 print magazine.)

What About Directories?

With directories such as Yahoo!, it may appear as if keywords in the domain name make a big difference to rankings. After all, the directories are not spidering the words on your pages and don't have much to go on to determine your position. But you know what? My very unscientific research shows that in actuality, keywords in the Yahoo! title are the more likely reason for top rankings. Remember, those that purchase keyword-rich domain names very often name their site the same thing as their domain name, and submit that phrase to Yahoo! as their title. For instance, a site with the domain of keyword-domains-r-us.com would probably be titled, "Keyword Domains R Us." As with the spidering engines, the words in the title are likely to be what's boosting those sites in the Yahoo! results, not the domain name.

What the Engines Say

Just to be sure I wasn't leading you down the wrong path, I asked Tom Wilde, General Manager of Search Services at Lycos, if domain names factored into their ranking algorithm. He told me that they are a factor in the Lycos algorithm, but since they're so open to being abused, they're a very small factor. He confirmed that the Title tag and the body text copy were given much more weight than the domain name. However, for those of you who just don't feel comfortable unless you have keywords in your domain name, Tom did tell me that using a hyphen between the keywords would be your best bet for getting them recognized as separate words.

Don't Worry About It

Since I've optimized hundreds of sites without ever purchasing keyword-rich domain names (and always get high rankings), I'm sticking with my "don't worry about it" stance! Like the Meta keyword tag, domain names are definitely not something to obsess over. I recommend purchasing the domain names that work best for branding reasons. To me, YourCompany.com name makes a whole lot more sense than your-keywords-here-so-you-can-rank-high.com, no matter how you slice it!

Homeowners in Florida still face a confusing market and a limited number of home insurance companies to choose from. Despite two straight years of legislative tampering with the market, Florida home insurance is still overpriced and hard to find - especially for homes that are older or closer to the coast. With the exit of nearly all of the national insurance companies homeowners are faced with a limited number of relatively new, smaller, local companies to protect their largest investment.

In this confusing market, what are the steps that you can take to create competition for your home insurance business and save the most?

For starters, you need to understand that while there are over 450 companies licensed to write homeowners insurance in Florida, only around 40 are actually writing any new business at this time. And of those 40, only a portion of those companies are willing to cover your home. Why? Because each company establishes underwriting guidelines for the type of homes they want to insure. The two most significant factors that companies use to determine whether they want to insure your home is its age and its distance from the Florida coast.

For the sake of discussion, let's assume that there are 25 companies of the 40 out their right now that are willing to insure your Florida home. The way to get the lowest cost homeowners insurance would be to get each and every one of these companies to quote your home. So how do you do that?

For starters each insurance company offers their insurance through agents that represent them. This results in a fragmented market where consumers like you run a high risk of not getting to all the companies that want to cover your Florida home due to the following:

Companies do not make their insurance available to each and every agent.

Agents do not want to offer insurance from all companies.

Some companies have captive agents that are only allowed to write coverage exclusively for their company.

Some companies sell directly to the public and bypass the agent network completely.

How does all of this affect you?

If you shop for Florida home insurance by only contacting one insurance agent, you are guaranteed to miss out on many of the companies who want to cover your home. Getting quotes from only one agent limits the competition for your Florida home insurance business and dramatically increases the chances that you will pay a lot more to cover your home.

You could rely on quote generator websites that ask you to provide sensitive, personal information. You will find some companies using this method, but you will not get to all the companies that want to cover your home. And you many get tons of unwanted phone calls and emails from multiple agents that are all representing the same company.

So what's the best way for you to get quotes from all of the Florida home insurance companies who want to cover your home?

Follow these steps to create the most competition for your Florida homeowners insurance business and you could save thousands:

Utilize Florida insurance agents that are independent - not captive agents that only represent one company.

Work with more than one independent insurance agent. If the first agent doesn't carry some of the companies that want to cover your home, the second agent just might.

Use large independent agents that represent many Florida home insurance companies. An agent that has only four companies is too small for you. Find agents that carry at least 10 or more companies that are still actively writing new business.

Finally, don't ignore the homeowners insurance companies in Florida that sell their insurance direct to the public using their own agency. Get quotes from these companies directly either by phone or through their website.

The following items will improve your odds when it comes to finding all of the Florida home insurance companies who want to cover your home. Each additional company that you can get to quote your home results in more competition and can save you thousands on homeowners insurance in Florida.

George S. Patton hit the nail on the head when he said, “Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash.”

Let’s face it: it’s risky to offer property insurance in the Southeast and insurance companies must price that risk in the form of premiums. In the past 35 years, six of the 10 most costly insured losses were hurricanes. (Katrina was largest with $45 billion in insured losses). Six hurricanes hit Florida in 2004-05 with insured losses of $68.8 billion. (To put these facts in proper prospective, the entire State of Florida’s proposed budget is approximately $71 billion.)

The Florida Legislature took a calculated risk in the recent special session. According to some industry analysts, the new legislation is predicted to reduce property insurance premiums by an average of 22 percent. For Floridians struggling to pay premiums to insure their property, I hope this is the case.

On the flip side, as a result of the lower premiums, Floridians will now have to take on a greater share of the risk if a catastrophic event hits the state. For example, the new legislation allows policyholders to exclude windstorm coverage in exchange for a lower premium. Even though it’s allowed, I will caution my policyholders to think very carefully before excluding coverage for hurricanes and tornadoes, two of Florida’s most devastating weather events. Mortgage companies and bankers agree—most will not allow their borrowers to exercise this option. I am letting my customers know that this is not a calculated risk—it’s a rash choice that could have devastating consequences.

The new legislation also lowered state-owned Citizens’ rates. This is fine and good—as long as no hurricane hits the state. If a large storm strikes, most insurance companies, including those that sell auto insurance, will be hit with assessments to make up Citizens’ deficits. To put it in perspective, as a result of hurricane claims in 2004, Citizens incurred $1.5 billion in claims, running up a deficit of $516 million. Who paid for this deficit? You and me.

As an insurance agent who has weathered many a storm, this makes me feel a little uneasy. I appreciate the Legislature’s work—some Floridians were facing financial ruin because of their rising premiums, but I also look at the other side of the story and see the possibility of all Floridians being on the hook for taking on this increased risk.

With the new legislation, it’s even more imperative that policyholders meet with their insurance agent to discuss their new options—and determine the amount of risk they feel they can comfortably take.

So, even though the Florida Legislature addressed the insurance crisis facing Floridians, much still must be done. Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and the Atlantic Seaboard states are all witnessing what Floridians are experiencing: seeing private insurance companies either stop writing new policies or stop renewing policies, especially along the coast where the risk is highest.

However, there is hope. I am pleased to report that Bradenton’s own U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, along with Representative Ginny Brown-Waite, introduced the Homeowners’ Insurance Protect Act of 2007 last month. This act is a comprehensive catastrophic insurance bill that would establish a federal reinsurance catastrophic fund (cat fund) as a federal backstop for future natural disasters. The bill encourages states to create catastrophic funds by providing a federal backstop for those states that voluntarily create state funds. In other words, the federal fund will provide lower-cost reinsurance to our existing cat fund, thus reducing the costs of homeowners' insurance to those around the country.

“This bill would provide lower-cost reinsurance to state catastrophic funds, the federal fund would reduce property insurance costs and increase availability in Florida and across the nation,” said Representative Buchanan.

Any cost savings achieved through the bill will be passed on to the policyholders and not held as corporate profits. The bill also calls for Catastrophic Capital Reserve Funds, which are essentially tax-deferred savings accounts that can be used by private insurance companies to help offset catastrophic claims.

I applaud Representative Buchanan for authoring this important bill. Floridians are taking a calculated risk by lowering premiums. It’s now time for the national government to step forward to help areas exposed to risks such as tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Buchanan and Waite-Brown to let them know that insurance agents and Floridians support this bill.

By Clare Lawrence 13th August 2004

Ever wonder why DNS systems came into existence? Efficiency. Every computer has a distinct IP address, and the Internet needed an elite method for obtaining these addresses and for managing the system as a whole. Enter ICANN.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number manages the DNS root of the Internet domain namespace. ICANN's role is to manage the assignment of identifiers, ensuring that all users have unique names.

The DNS system is run by a series of servers called DNS servers. ICANN manages the root DNS domains, under which are the top-level domains.

It also manages:

Organizational domains

Geographical domains

Reverse domains

Beneath the top-level domains are other naming authorities such as Nominet, the UK's naming authority.

How does a DNS Query work?

The process occurs in two parts. Firstly, a name query begins at a client computer and is passed to DNS client service for resolution. When the query cannot be resolved locally, DNS servers are queried.

For example, when a web browser calls the fully qualified domain name www.discountdomainsuk.com, the request is passed on to the DNS client service to resolve the name by using locally cached information. If the query is held in the cache, then the process is complete.

If, however, the query cannot be answered locally, the DNS client service uses a server list (ordered in sequence) to query external DNS servers. When a DNS server receives a query, it first checks to see if it is authoritive for that domain name. If it is authoritive, it resolves the name, and the process is complete.

If the DNS server is unable to resolve the query, it in turns queries other DNS servers, using a process known as recursion. DNS servers make use of root hints to assist in locating DNS servers, which are able to provide the required result. In this way, DNS queries are minimised and the Internet is able to operate quickly and effectively.

A typical query may run as follows:

Client contacts Nameserver A looking for www.discountdomainsuk.com

Nameserver A checks its cache, but can't answer, so it queries a server authoritive for the Internet root.

The root server responds with a referral to a server authoritive for the .com domains.

NameserverA queries the the .com server and gets referred to the server authoritive for www.discountdomainsuk.com

Nameserver A queries this server and gets the IP address for www.discountdomainsuk.com.

Nameserver A replies to the client with the IP address.

Queries can return answers that are authoritive, positive, negative or referral in nature. In the event of a negative answer, another DNS server is queried.

You've had experience using them many times before for auto, home, and life insurance. Quote generator websites have been around in one form or another since the start of the Internet to help you obtain lower quotes on multiple types of insurance.

While these sites come in many different shapes and sizes, here are the typical steps they use with regards to home insurance. You enter information about your home including its location, size, age, roof type, construction materials, and other features along with your contact information. The information you provide is forwarded by these quote generator websites to insurance companies who evaluate your home profile and make a business decision on whether they would like to present a quote to insure your home.

Companies that are interested in covering your home may send their quote information to the quote generator website you originally used or they will contact you either through one of their agents or directly. Depending on the website you used to request the quotes you could receive an email with detailed quote information, phone calls from agents and companies, or some combination of both.

Outside of Florida in states where there are hundreds of companies to choose from for homeowners insurance, these quote generator websites are usually helpful. They do the legwork for you and you end up with a lot of cost effective options to choose from.

Getting quotes for Florida home insurance presents a totally different situation when it comes to using these websites.

For starters, there are only about 40 Florida home insurance companies writing new business, so unlike in other states, you have a lot fewer companies to choose from.

More importantly, this means each Florida home insurance company has to decide which of these quote generator websites they want to be featured on.

Either way, you'll end up paying more for Florida homeowners insurance.

Missing out on even one company that is interested in covering you home is not a risk that you should take during the Florida home insurance crisis. Each new Florida home insurance quote that you obtain could save you thousands depending on where you live.

Finally, when you use Florida home insurance quote generator websites, you have to give some thought to the privacy of your personal information. While most of these websites protect your personal information, using some of them will result in you receiving a high volume of unwanted emails and phone calls from Florida insurance agents with a quote from the exact same company.

During the Florida home insurance crisis, you'll have a better chance of finding lower cost insurance if you use multiple independent agents who can offer a large number of companies for coverage instead of relying on quote generator websites. Working with at least two large independent agents who can offer you the largest number of Florida home insurance agents is essential. Because each agent could represent a different group of companies than another agent in the same area, using more than one agent is the best way to make sure you are getting quotes from all the companies writing new business in your area.

The more Florida home insurance quotes you get, the more you will save during the Florida home insurance crisis.

Recently, Florida residents along the center of the State got another dose of natural disaster; a horrible tornado blasted through, killed 19 and injured dozens more. Most of the victims of the storm say they just cancelled insurance because of rising rates - few will get their property back – most will go bankrupt. Everyday people in Florida talk about insurance. Do I have enough, Is my house covered, can I afford to buy health insurance? Floridians have had enough and vow to force Congress to fix Florida’s insurance problem. Rates for both property and health insurance have gone up considerably since Katrina hit the Gulf Coast 18 months ago - some premiums have more than tripled. Insurance carriers like State Farm were hit with billions of dollars in losses and one expert says, “It’s now time for them to make up the difference.”

FLORIDA HEALTH NEWS FLASH

How to find "Affordable Health Insurance" For Individuals and Families living in Florida

Florida health insurance for individuals and families is relatively hard to find and most find coverage expensive or due to health conditions; not available at all.

Health insurance rates have skyrocketed in the last few years in Florida, 21% of Dade county residents go without health insurance even though doing so puts you and your family at risk. (read the PDF version) -- Adults younger than 35 are nearly twice as likely to be uninsured as adults 45 and older, according to a report by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Twenty-seven percent of young adults in their 20s have no health insurance, according to a poll conducted by USA Today and the National Endowment for Financial Education.

Affordable health insurance plans are out there, you just have to know how to put the Internet to work for you.

To find the best value in a health insurance plan you need to know that buying insurance policies direct from a "major carriers" without comparison WILL probably cost you. The best way to find a policy is to:

· Find a Florida Health Insurance Consultant

· FloridaHealthInsuranceWeb.com (recommended)

· Select the most cost-effective plans

· You can talk with a trained consultant - FREE!

· Be covered a lot sooner than you think!

One other note on "Florida Health Insurance Web" -- They provide Floridians with a total review of all available insurance plans, plus information about health insurance updated daily.

Is It Affordable??

Finding affordable health insurance has never been easy; it is not "one size fits all." Depending on your current state of health, your budget, and individual needs, the best insurance for you may be far different than the best insurance for your friend or another family member. Now with rates so high, what do you do protect your family? Contact an expert insurance consultant and talk to them about your needs. They can show you all available policies, not just one policy from one carrier. A basic understanding of the various types of insurance that are available in Florida, and what each does and does not cover, can be helpful in determining which plan will work best for each person. Before you buy insurance for any purpose, a talk with a “Florida health insurance consultant” can save you literally thousands of dollars per year.

Picking Policies

Which policy to choose, how much deductible is right for me, are my prescription drugs covered; these are the things that are on most people's minds when they look for health insurance. In Florida there are many insurance agents, selling their special type of health insurance policy. These policies vary from agent to agent, even in the same city, so the best bet is to search all available health insurance companies through a total insurance "provider" like: www.FloridaHealthInsuranceWeb.com The first step in selecting health insurance is being knowledgeable about what each type of policy is, and what they cover. Traditional health insurance, also called "fee for service" or 80/20, is the type of insurance that most of us grew up with. With that type of health insurance, you are entitled to visit any doctor you choose, and the insurance company pays 80% of the bill.

80/20 Plans

This (80/20) type of insurance offers the greatest flexibility, but carries the highest out of pocket expenses. One thing to remember...a deductible must be met before the insurance company will pay a dime. Another point to remember about buying health insurance; the lower your monthly premium, the higher the deductible will be. The insurance company usually reserves the right to cap payments if, in their opinion, the doctor's fees are higher than what is thought to be "reasonable and customary" in your area. This is an excellent type of coverage to have if you become extremely ill and require a network of specialists, or if your medical bills are astronomical. Once your expenses for the year reach a certain level, the insurance company will take over and pay 100%.

PPO & HMO Plans

There are two basic types of managed care - HMO and PPO. With a Florida HMO, or Health Maintenance Organization, you pay a monthly premium in exchange for comprehensive medical care. There is usually a small co-payment for doctor's visits (usually ranging from $5 to $25), and a somewhat higher co-pay or deductible is needed for hospitalization. The upside to this HMO Plan is: Your out of pocket expenses are significantly easier to predict and manage with an HMO rather than a fee for service plan. However, the downside of this plan is: an HMO introduces the concept of a "gatekeeper." In an HMO, you must choose a primary care physician. That doctor, working in tandem with a risk management insurance officer, will determine your access to specialists. Finally, a Florida HMO plan requires you to use doctors that are part of the Florida HMO's network. If you travel a lot, be sure to find out what the provisions are should you require an out of network doctor.

The other type of plan is the PPO. A PPO, or (Preferred Provider Organization), can be considered a blend of HMO and fee for service plans. You will choose a primary care physician in Florida, and generally use doctors that are part of the organization. However, a PPO lets you see doctors who are not part of the network for a somewhat higher fee. This increased flexibility is excellent for those who travel frequently, or for those whose current doctor is not a member of the organization.

Health Savings

Many other options exist for covering your medical expenses. A Health Savings Account allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars each month. Catastrophic insurance carries a low premium with a high deductible, and is designed to cover you if you develop a serious illness or injury. However, for the average consumer, the choice is generally between fee for service and managed care. All types of plans carry their own advantages and disadvantages, and it is important to understand what these are in order to make the right decisions for your family.

If you own an older Florida home, if can be challenging for you to find affordable Florida home insurance coverage. Your older home might be more likely to have hurricane damage depending on the building code that was in effect when your home was built. If the electrical, plumbing, and heating systems are outdated, your older home might be more likely to sustain damage from fire, water, or other perils. Finally, the type of roof you have and the condition it is in could result in a larger claim after a Florida hurricane hits your older home.

With all of that said, it is still possible for many owners of older Florida homes to find private homeowners insurance in Florida - and at an affordable price.

As Florida home insurance companies consider the age of a home, they generally group homes into the following categories:

Built 2004 and prior

Built 1994 and prior

20, 30, or 40 years old or newer

Up to 75 years old

The first two categories take into consideration the Florida Building Code modifications of the early 2000's and the mid 1990's. Homes built after each of the building code updates are considered to be more resistant to damage, especially from hurricanes.

The third group above is different depending on the insurance company, but the primary idea is this: As homes reach 20, 30, or 40 years of age, home insurance companies generally require 4 point inspections prior to agreeing to issue coverage. These inspections look at the age and condition of the roof, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. Depending on what these inspections uncover, you might be required to update or improve one or more of these items.

Finally, once your home reaches 75 years of age, homeowners insurance companies in Florida will rarely agree to offer coverage for it - regardless of the outcome of the inspections and home upgrades that are present.

Ignoring for a moment the distance your Florida home is from the coast, here is how insurance companies generally look at the age of your home:

Homes built 1995 and later will be the easiest to find insurance coverage for and you will have more company options to consider.

As your home hits the age of 20, 30, and 40 years old, you will have fewer company options to choose from as each of these milestones is reached.

If your home is 75 years old or older, the chances that it will be covered by a private Florida home insurance company are slim.

Here are some things you can do to give your older Florida home the best chance at affordable Florida home insurance:

Get a Florida wind mitigation inspection on your home at your own expense.

Take immediate corrective action on the deficiencies identified in the wind inspection report. There might be certain improvements that can be made to things like wall to roof connectors that don't require a new roof or there might be other low coast mitigation steps that you can take.

Find out the age of your roof, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. Find out how much it will cost to address each of these items and make the improvements that you can afford to make now.

Some improvements might be eligible for Federal energy tax credits or credits from the utility companies for improved efficiency. See if either of these sources might offer you some financial assistance.

Let your local Florida legislators know about your situation and encourage them to extend the My Safe Florida Home program - and to expand the pool of homes that qualify for matching grants to harden Florida homes.

Finally, when it comes to shopping for Florida home insurance, it is essential that you work with more than one independent insurance agent - not just one. Why? Because at this point in time, there are about 40 Florida home insurance companies still writing new business. However, as the age of your home increases, many of these companies won't cover your home. Working with more than one agent will give you the best chance to get quotes from all of the Florida insurance companies that are still covering older homes. If you miss even one of these companies you could end up paying thousands more for Florida home insurance.

Don't rely on misinformation or word of mouth when it comes to finding affordable Florida home insurance on an older home. Follow these steps to give you the most options for insuring your older Florida home.

Homeowner's insurance may soon be increasing for Florida residents—and even more for those living in the southern part of the state. This is the ideal time to check your policy and your home to see if you can cut your costs and make up for the rates hike.

Your Policy

1. One of the simplest ways to decrease your insurance premiums is to increase your deductible. This is true of most types of insurance, but few pay off as much as increasing the deductible on your home. Increase it to $2,500 and you could save hundreds of dollars every year.

2. If you're looking at getting a new policy, ignore the new trend for online insurance shopping. In locations that are subject to special weather conditions, there called hurricanes in Florida, it's always best to shop locally. Work with a local agent who deals with multiple carriers, and you'll benefit by having an agent who does the shopping for you and can help you choose the best deal from among several carriers.

3. Choose an A-rated, admitted carrier. An A-rated carrier is more likely to remain financially stable in tough times, and an admitted carrier has state-approved rates and is covered by Florida's Guarantee Fund. Both of these factors mean more security for your policy.

4. Ask your agent about their carrier's renewal processing process, and find out if they requote the policy each year. Choose an agent that does requote every time renewal comes up to make sure you always have the best coverage at the best price.

Your Home

5. If your Florida home was built before 2002, having it surveyed for wind mitigation factors could save you hundreds of dollars every year. This kind of survey documents design features in your home—such as FBC shingles and reinforced garage doors—that help it resist damage in high winds. In most cases you'll save enough in the first year alone to cover the cost of the survey.

6. Storm damage is a big factor in Florida insurance rates, and one way in which you can keep your rates low is by owning a home with a hip roof rather than a gable roof. This type of roof diverts wind better than a gable roof does, and puts less strain on the house during high winds.

7. Make sure your home is within five miles of a fire station, and within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant. If it's too far away from either of these things, you may have to buy your insurance from Citizens, Florida's state run insurance carrier, and means paying top dollar. As in the case of the hip roof, this tip might not help if you already own a home and plan to stay there long-term. However, if you're looking to relocate it's something to keep in mind.

8. Have your alarm system monitored. Overall you might not save money, but it more or less allows you to improve your home's security for free, or close to it, as the amount you save on your insurance will typically cover the cost of having your alarm monitored.

9. If you have a diving board, a trampoline, or a dog of a dangerous breed, you'll pay dearly for it with your insurance carrier. You may even find that conventional carriers aren't interested in insuring you, and that means getting insurance from Citizens. You may not want to give up a much-loved family pet, but there's no harm in questioning how much you really need a diving board.

10. Owning a property of five or more acres increases your insurance costs. In most cases you'll need to buy a policy from a specialized carrier, which naturally costs more. However, if you don't mind reducing your property a little, you can sell off an acre or two and reduce your premiums at the same time—reduce your land parcel to four acres or less and you'll be able to shop around and reduce your costs.

There is a section in your homeowners’ policy (including Citizens HO-3) that very few people are aware. It is called “Special Limits of Liability” under Coverage-C Personal Property Coverage. There are eleven items in this portion of your policy. You should know insurance companies limit losses of these items as mentioned below.

There’s a $200 limit on money, bank notes, bullion, gold, silver, plati¬num, coins and medals. This does not apply to plated flatware. There’s a $1000 limit on securities, accounts, deeds, evidences of debt, letters of credit, notes other than bank notes, manuscripts, personal records, passports, tickets and stamps. This dollar limit applies to these categories regardless of the medium (such as paper or computer software) on which the ma¬terial exists. These limits include the cost to research, replace or restore the information from the lost or damaged material. A fire-proof safe would be a good investment for you if you own these items. A bank safe deposit box is even better. There’s a $1000 limit on watercraft, including their trailers, fur¬nishings, equipment and outboard engines or motors. There’s a $1000 limit on trailers not used with watercraft. Most watercraft and related equipment have a much grater value and should be insured with a separate boat policy. There’s a $1000 limit for loss by theft of jewelry, watches, furs, precious and semi-precious stones. There’s a $2000 limit for loss by theft of firearms. $2500 for loss by theft of silverware, silver-plated ware, goldware, gold-plated ware and pewterware. This includes flatware, hollowware, tea sets, trays and trophies made of or including silver, gold or pewter. Please notice in 5, 6 and 7 the word THEFT. The limits only relate to loss by theft. If there is another type of loss such as a fire the items will be considered under the larger personal property limit. There’s a $2500 limit on property on the 'residence premises' used at any time or in any manner for any 'business' purpose. Remember this is a homeowners policy. Business property should be covered under a separate business policy. There’s a $250 limit on property away from the 'residence premises' used at any time or in any manner for any 'business' purpose. However, this limit does not apply to loss to adaptable electronic apparatus as described in Special Limits 10 and 11 below. There’s a $1000 for loss to electronic apparatuses, while in a car or other motorized vehicle, if the item is operated by battery or home electricity while retaining its capability of being operated by other sources of power. Electronic apparatus includes: Accessories or antennas; or Tapes, wires, records, discs or other media; for use with any electronic apparatus. There’s a $1000 limit for loss to electronic apparatuses, while not in a car or other motorized vehicle, if the item is operated by battery or home electricity while retaining its capability of being operated by other sources of power. Is away from the 'residence premises'; and Is used at any time or in any manner for any 'business' purpose. Electronic apparatus includes: Accessories and antennas; or Tapes, wires, records, discs or other media; for use with any electronic apparatus.

The important point is that these items are considered business property and that’s why they’re limited to $1000. They should be covered by a business policy.

Now that football season is over and you are looking for something to occupy your time, try leaning back in your recliner with a cool drink and reading your homeowners policy. Ha! Ha! However the wise thing to do is to review and inventory your personal property, such as money, guns, securities, deeds, jewelry and other items mentioned above in your home. If you have high value in any of these items, you should contact your agent for special coverage, find a safe deposit box and/or obtain a fire-rated safe for your home.
